There are really up to eight versions of the vintage Ponytail Barbie, though it is possible to tell which version is released in which year by attending to the different features or marking each Barbie doll has. They are referred to as #1 through #8 Ponytail Barbie with #1 being the rarest and the worth the most to a collector. The original Ponytail Barbie was produced from 1959 all through 1965, though later models are not worth as much as the earlier models.
The Ponytail Barbie has sported many different hair colors though there were more blondes produced than either brunette or titian (red-haired) dolls made. These dolls also had curled bangs or fringes with hair of varying length tied back with either a ribbon or a band of some kind. Accessories include sunglasses, earrings, open toe high heels, and some came with a special pedestal stand for Barbie to stand on.
The #1 Ponytail Barbie, especially if she's never been removed from the box, is sometimes worth several thousand dollars. To identify a #1 Ponytail Barbie she should have all of the following: White Irises, high arched eyebrows, holes in her feet with copper tubing in her legs, black and white zebra swimsuit, faded white skin and a solid feeling body. Finally the markings which are found on the right buttock, should say Barbie™/Pats.Pend./©MCMLVIII/by Mattel/Inc.
The #2 Ponytail Barbie has all the same identification marks as #1 Barbie, except she doesn't have holes in her feet or copper tubing. Still, the #2 Ponytail Barbie is still often worth several thousand dollars.
If the same marks exist on your doll, as with the #1 Ponytail Barbie, except she has blue irises, blue or brown eyeliner, and curved eyebrows, then you have a #3 Ponytail Barbie, which is still worth several hundred dollars.
The #4 Ponytail Barbie is almost exactly the same as the #2 Ponytail Barbie (no copper tubing or holes in her feet) except she has tan skin color. Ponytail Barbie #5 has a hollow body while #6 Ponytail Barbie wore a red jersey swimsuit and had a slightly chubbier face. Other versions released in the mid '60's have sported different hair styles and wore different clothing.
Also, Mattel released some reproductions of the Ponytail Barbie during the Nineties. All of those Barbies are marked Barbie/©1958, 1993/Mattel, Inc./Malaysia on Barbie's rear. Make sure that when you are buying a Ponytail Barbie that the markings on her behind are included in the gallery images. Naturally, the vintage Ponytail Barbie is worth much more than the 1994 release, so the markings will help you be sure that you are getting an actual vintage doll.
